Ground Tire Rubber as a Modifier in Performance-Graded Asphalt Binder

American Association of State Highway and Transportation Oicials (AASHTO) members are in the process of voting on revising standards to include the use of ground tire rubber (GTR) as a modiier in Performance Graded Binders. At their annual meeting in August, the Sub-Committee on Materials (responsible for developing and maintaining speciications) approved the revision and placement on
the ballot for vote by member agencies. Each year AASHTO updates and publishes a Materials Book which contains materials speciications and test methods commonly used in the construction of highway facilities. RAF views AASHTO’s action as another positive development in the increased awareness of the science and practical application of rubberized asphalt.

Editorial: States inally accepting rubberized asphalt

“The time is right for rubberized asphalt, because the price of conventional asphalt has gone up,” said RMA Vice President Michael Blumenthal. Blumenthal expects to see signiicant growth in the rubberized asphalt market over the next two years, particularly with the establishment of the Rubberized Asphalt Foundation, a research foundation dedicated to the science of recycled tire rubber in asphalt.
